Background behind the development of Carbon Solders

The enhancement of awareness about the preservation of the environment is the result of the on-going worldwide trend of the disposal of various harmful substances. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives were issued by theEU (European Union), thus the member countries strictly enforce import restrictions on electronic equipment. Besides the EU, even each other country has its own versions of RoHS such as Management Methods for Controlling Pollution by Electronic Information Products in China and J-MOSS in Japan. The traditional “solder” is an alloy made of tin and lead and it is basically used in huge volumes for electronic circuits. The lead that is included to the “solder” is harmful to the human body and its disposal is one of the major causes of the degradation of the environment. Upon this, “lead-free solder alloys” that do not contain harmful lead were developed. However, this alone failed to completely replace the traditional lead-based solders because of their issues such as strength insufficiency, high melting point and expensive costs. We at Metal and Technology Inc., together with the academia, have made advancements in the research on overcoming the weaknesses of “lead-free soldering alloys”. Recently, we have discovered that adding carbon to the lead-free solder tremendously strengthens the solder and we filed a patent application for our discovery. Together with it, we began the manufacture and sale of non-harmful, strong, durable and inexpensive Carbon Solder of each types and uses, to replace currently lead solders with the lead-free ones.
